Project Overview
This project delivers a comprehensive program of heritage conservation and fabric repair works to Building 14 of the significant Kirkbride Complex at Callan Park, Rozelle. The works have been carefully scoped to respect and reinstate the building’s heritage character in accordance with applicable conservation management principles and relevant heritage approvals.
Scope of Works
Roof & Chimney
- Supply and installation of Penrhyn Welsh Slate roofing, maintaining the authentic material palette of the original building fabric
- Chimney rebuilds using heritage-compatible materials, restoring structural integrity and visual character to these prominent architectural features
Eaves, Fascias & Timber Elements
- Patching of holes and defects within eave soffits to restore weather protection and visual continuity
- Fascia board replacements using appropriate timber profiles consistent with the original detailing
- Painting of timber windows and doors using heritage-appropriate paint systems to protect and preserve existing joinery
Masonry & Stone Conservation
- Brick and stone repointing throughout, with mortars matched in strength, colour and composition to protect original fabric
- Synthetic stone repairs to reinstate missing or deteriorated decorative and structural stone elements
- Stone indent repairs to address localised areas of significant masonry loss or damage
- Biocide façade treatment to eliminate biological growth — including moss, lichen and algae — and protect masonry surfaces from ongoing organic deterioration
Window Reveals & Sealants
- Application of elastomeric sealant to window reveals to improve weatherproofing while accommodating natural building movement
Verandah Repairs & Reinstatement
- Verandah structural and fabric repairs, reinstating heritage form and function
- Installation of Z600 corrugated iron roofing to verandah areas, consistent with the historic material character of the complex
Stormwater & Drainage Systems
- Installation of quad copper guttering, maintaining the traditional profile and material finish
- New copper downpipes and heritage rainwater heads, ensuring a cohesive and period-appropriate drainage system throughout
Floor & Threshold Reinstatement
- Reinstatement of bitumen and sandstone floor borders, restoring the original interior and threshold floor layouts and material relationships
Metal Elements
- Painting of metal vents using a durable, heritage-compatible coating system to protect against corrosion and maintain aesthetic consistency
Heritage Significance
The Kirkbride Complex is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register and forms one of Australia’s most intact examples of Victorian-era institutional architecture. All works are undertaken with the highest regard for heritage fabric retention, minimal intervention principles, and the use of materials and methods sympathetic to the building’s original construction.
