The University of Sydney - Heydon-Laurence Building Roof Replacement

Early in 2011 Rapid commenced replacement of terracotta roof tiles on the heritage-listed Heydon-Laurence building in Science Road on the University’s main campus. A selection of the old tiles were retained and stored for potential patching use by the client elsewhere on campus and the roof was completely renewed using like-for-like materials and workmanship. Extensive replacement flashings, finials and rainwater goods in zinc, lead and copper including patinated lead flashings and copper valleys were tooled up using traditional methods as well as wood-turned urns and finials. The project restored structural integrity to the building’s roof structure and clock towers and solved significant longstanding leaks into research labs and teaching facilities in the building. The project was a welcome opportunity for us to work once again with Otto Cserhalmi and Partners, Architects. Significant variations were approved to allow for the removal of glass fibre insulation and asbestos and other waste deposited in the ceiling cavity by unknown persons in the past. Despite latent conditions and weather delays, the works were accomplished well ahead of the program.
